'Laura Contest Information & Rules
Welcome, you are at the right place for getting information regarding the Pepin Laura contest and Little Sisters held the 2nd Saturday of September.
Laura Contest Information & Rules
PLEASE NOTE: There is a time change.
Due to numerous activities needing access to the main stage, the Laura contest has been changed to the following times: Registration will be from 9:00 am until 11:15 am, also Little Sisters are to sign up during this time. Presentation of Little Sisters on stage will be at noon and the Laura contest will immediately follow.
1. There are four age categories; ages 8, 9, 10 & 11. One winner will be selected from each age group.
2. Contestants will register at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Park in Pepin on Saturday between 9 and 11:15 am. The registration area is at the top of the hill under the shelter by the playground equipment.
3. Please allow enough time to register and for the contestant to go through 2 stages of judging. We need to be finished with registration & pre-judging by 11:30 am.
4. Fee is $10 per contestant. If there is more than one family member entering the contest, the 1st member will be $10 and additional family members will be $5 each.
5. Pre-judging will take place on top of the hill under the shelter next to the playground equipment.
6. All Laura contestants are invited to ride in the parade on Sunday. Parade line up is ˝ block from the intersection of County N (Dunn St) and Hwy 35. This intersection is 6 blocks south of the park. If you are going to ride in the parade you must be there between 1:30 and 1:45 pm. After the parade the girls will be dropped off at the motel across the street from the stage in the park.
7. If a girl has won the Laura contest in any age group in the past, she is not eligible to enter the contest again.
8. Contestants are required to be in appropriate “prairie girl” attire for the time period of 1867 – 1875.
9. Once the contestant is registered she will proceed to pre-judging activities. Here she will answer a written questionnaire related to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” books.
Ages 8 & 9 will be asked questions from “Little House in the Big Woods”.
Ages 10 & 11 will be asked questions from both “Little House in the Big Woods” and “Little House on the Prairie”.
10. After finishing the written questionnaire, contestants will answer a few questions asked by pre-judges.
11. At NOON Laura contestants should be ready to go on stage to introduce themselves and to answer another question before a panel of judges and the audience.
12. The scores from the written questionnaire, the prejudging and the final presentation will be combined and a winner chosen. If there is a tie, finalists will be required to answer another set of questions.
13. Contestants will receive a gift bag.
Information for Little Sisters
1. The age category for Little Sisters is 5 through 7.
2. Register for Little Sisters at the registration tent.
3. There is no fee for Little Sisters.
4. The registration area is at the top of the hill under the shelter next to the playground equipment. Registration is from 9:00 – 11:15 am.
5. Little Sisters are required to be in appropriate “prairie girl” attire for the time period 1867-1875.
6. At 11:20 Little Sisters should gather at the registration area to learn a song that they will sing together on stage.
7. At NOON Little Sisters will go on stage to sing together and then be introduced, after that each one will receive a treat.
